@jen_9thhouse and I spent the majority of June hanging out in Colorado (plus a big portion of time driving to/from). You might remember some of my posts from that era. We stayed in an Airbnb that overlooked this beautiful windy river called the South Platte River. So every day I looked out onto this river and watched the pack of Mule Deer that lived here in the field. Eventually, I took the drone out and got a few nice photos. Maybe someday I'll share them.

almost exactly a year ago we were in Boston checking out the city for funsies (and to get away from the August heat in ATL). We did some strolling around and walked through some really great parks. One of them had these little boats with benches and you could get taken for a little ride around the pond. So we did that. This is my image from that adventure.

A slightly funny story:

I was flying the drone around and as I was bringing the drone in for a landing I was looking at the remote and not where I was walking and I tripped on some steps. No big deal, I landed the drone and then put it away. About 10 minutes later I walked by the boat captain and he said "what happened to your toe?!" and I looked down and a big portion of my toenail had ripped off and it was bleeding. I hadn't even noticed. I guess flying the drone causes enough stress that I'm able to block out pain!

It's me. Hi. I'm the asshole, it's me! Ok, so this

It's me. Hi. I'm the asshole, it's me! Ok, so this one goes all the way back to 2007, when I was down in Mexico working for the @santafeworkshops as a digital media guru/support. But while there, I got to learn/explore/shoot a lot with the students and visiting faculty. I got to travel on some excursions and I took an attitude of ‘always say yes’ to whatever I was invited to, so ultimately I was shooting a new (to me) and exciting culture and geography every single day. I was rapidly developing as a photographer and figuring out my vision of what kind of photographer I wanted to be.

This image is a photo of me bumping into the boundary of what kind of photographer I didn’t want to be. In the moment, I didn’t see a problem with how I was going about making images. Yeah, I was in the street but I wasn’t blocking them from doing their art. But the truth is, I was in the way. I was drawing too much attention to myself and I was invading the performance space. I was only thinking about the shot I wanted to get and I wasn’t thinking about how my actions might affect the performers in the parade. I was a foreigner not respecting the locals.

The woman just to my left in this photo, she reacted to me being there. She shook one of things she was holding in my face and said something in Spanish I understood to be, “get the F out of the way!”.

It’s a small moment that I wish I could go back and change, but these types of experiences (and a healthy amount of self-reflection) can shape us to become better photographers and better citizens of the world. I know I continue to learn every year that goes by, but I don’t always realize the lessons I’m learning as they are happening.

from my 2017 South Africa travels. That was a spec

from my 2017 South Africa travels. That was a special trip for me because ever since I got serious about photography, I had this secret wish that I could get paid to go to Africa and shoot stuff (with a camera!). It was the idea that my skills were good enough for the extra travel costs. I mean why wouldn't they just hire somebody local? That's how it was in my head... once I reached the point people paid me to travel internationally to use my camera, I felt like I had proven to myself that I was good enough. That's not an easy hurdle to climb over either. Imposter Syndrome is a constant battle. But this trip will always be a reminder to me that I have earned my stripes.

Plus it was also special because it was so much fun! I had an amazing 3 weeks over there and would love to go back.

Great sunset last night in Fort Lauderdale!

I saw this view in my rearview mirror as we headed

I saw this view in my rearview mirror as we headed east, back home, away from the mountains. I did the thing, like in the movies, where you hit the brakes, turn the wheel super hard, drift a 180 degree turn and are now facing the other direction. That's what I did. Then I whipped out my iPhone (actually it was just stuck to the magnet on my dash cuz I had the google map pulled up on it) and I got the shot before it disappeared. I mean I don't think it was going anywhere, but it's more dramatic if there's a sense of urgency.

That's Pikes Peak and we got some nice views of it as we passed through Colorado Springs. But it was raining, so the views were blurry.

DId you guys know it's a thing to push a peanut up that mountain with your nose? The people that do it are called "The Pikes Peak Peanut Pushers". Google it. I feel like that's something my friends over at the @peanutinstitute might find interesting.
