So on December 12th, there was a group of us who got together and photographed people with low or no incomes, so they could send pictures to loved ones. But it wasn’t just a few of us… it was people all over the country! It was a nation wide event called Help Portrait. I got involved with the APA group and we shot over 100 subjects! Click here for the post on APA’s blog!

This picture is of Stephanie Richardson shooting and if you look carefully you can see me holding a reflector!

Here’s a picture of Michelle Graham shooting, and if you look carefully you can see me standing in the background not really doing anything!

Here’s a nice video that Jason Forbart shot, click here to watch it.

It was really cool to be able to offer something like this to people who rarely if ever get a nice picture made of themselves and we had so much fun doing it!

The Santa Fe Workshops is celebrating 20 years in business and they have released a 20 month calender featuring images made by students and staff over the years. I’m honored that they selected one of my pictures from Mexico to include in the calendar. They chose to use it for March 2010, which is nice because my birthday is in March.

The calendars are available for sale for $20 at the website (http://www.santafeworkshops.com) with some of the proceeds going for the Workshops Scholarships Fund.
They’ve also released the Winter/Spring 2009 course catalog and they used 2 of my images in that. You can download the catalog or be put on the mailing by clicking here. Spring courses start soon, so get on it!

Also, if you are very astute, you might have noticed that the beautiful cover photograph of the flowers was shot by one of my consulting clients, Joyce Tenneson!

Time has flown by, but back in August, I got my hands on a Canon 24mm tilt shift lens ($1149 from Amazon and more info here) and played with it at a picnic/barbecue at my house with some friends and coworkers.

The tilt shift lens is very tricky to use. For the non-photographers out there: basically it gives you the ability to manipulate your plane of focus on an x, y, and z axis instead of just the normal x axis. So you can throw certain areas of the image out of focus. The problem is that the more you manipulate the plane of focus, the more bouncing around inside the lens the light has to do and therefore, the more difficult it is to accurately asses the needed exposure settings. Add to this that this is a very wide angle lens and has a tendency to distort the image at times and you get a situation where it takes a lot of practice to use this lens well.

Anyway, below is a flickr slideshow of some of the more successful images I got that night. If there is no slideshow showing up, try clicking here. Also, 3 of these shots were actually taken with my 50mm prime, but I’ll let you try to figure out which ones!

I’m interested to hear what you (the reader), think about using these slideshows on my blog versus what I usually do, which is just load up all the images one after the other down the column.

That’s where I shot this HDR shot of the Mazda CX-7 I briefly owned.

In his portfolio slideshow he actually used a song from the Dropkick Murphy’s (an Irish punk rock band) and it really fits, which is awesome!

Anyway, he recently released what everyone says is an amazing book of photography stories and lessons called “The Moment it Clicks“. It’s on my amazon wish list if anyone feels like being super nice to me.

He also has a really great blog with great stories and photos. His recent post called “The long and winding road“, goes back in time a bit but then leads up to a special moment he has with his wife, Annie. While in Santa Fe I also met Annie who is equally awesome and they are both so nice and great to be around and as is obvious from the pictures in that post, they have a special relationship.

I highly recommend taking his classes or buying his book or at the very least, reading his blog.

However, I do really like one of her current projects called “Killers Kill, Dead Men Die“. It’s a film noir photography shoot involving just about every actor or actress you can think of. It also utlizes a style of post processing that I am experimenting with myself.

David Leeson knows a thing or two about photography. He’s been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Photography 3 times, winning in 2004. He’s been shooting for the Dallas Morning News since 1984 and routinely works in conflict zones. But why am I bringing it up? Because I just finished reading a Q and A over at The Blog of Mark Hancock where he talks extensively about audio and video being new tools for photographers to tell the story.

Nobody likes it when I say this, but the future of photojournalism is video. Everyone freaks. Everyone calm down. Everyone needs to just relax. Take a deep breath. I said video. I didn’t say the death of the still image. I didn’t say that still photography is no more, it’s going to be all video. I’m not saying that. I’m saying in the future for photojournalist – particularly those working for newspapers – if you don’t develop those skills in multi-media – whether it just be audio or audio and video – you’re going to have a lot tougher time advancing in your career or getting a job in the first place.

It’s already showing up. There are already people doing it. There are already students who probably know how to do it already. They’re going to have those skills and those skills are going to be put into play.

I only copied over part of the answer, but you should click on over if you have an interest in photography or video and read more. The rest of the interview is actually really interesting too, as he talks a lot about his conflict zone work and the ethics of a photojournalist. It’s fascinating stuff, to me at least.

So the Santa Fe Workshops just released the Summer/Fall 2008 Catalog and they used 7 of my images throughout, including 2 half pages. Next to every image is the copyright owner’s name, so everyone who looks at the catalog knows who shot the images. I’m pretty excited to have my work exhibited next to work by some of the best photographers in the world. It’s my first National Publication and it’s really validating.

Here’s what the amazing Scott Kelby had to say about it in his blog

I just got the 2008 spring/fall catalog of classes from the Santa Fe Workshops, and since it’s just a listing of their upcoming classes, I guess I wasn’t expecting to see so much incredible photography, but…it’s filled with incredible photography! It’s a beautifully designed catalog that makes such great use of photography that I had to sit there with it for a few minutes, and just let the images soak in.

You can view a PDF of the catalog by clicking the link below:

So I spent most of the last 6 days on the road with one of my best friends Jeremey Brown, owner/operator of The Music Hall in Fayetteville, AR and the author of the soon to be NYtimes Bestseller, “Branding the Band: Life Inside the Electric Rodeo“. I traveled with him to Nashville and back as he promoted his book and did some business in the Music City. I was taking pictures and video of the experience for a project I’m working on concerning his various endeavors. It’s a chance for me to challenge myself to tell the story with mostly still images and audio. Since I come from a video production background, this isn’t the easiest thing for me to do. But I feel good about the pictures and audio and video that I came back with and am super excited about putting it all together and adding it to my portfolio.

We got a giant case of these canned Mocha Lattes and used it as fuel for the trip. Those are the ones I drank during a 3 hour period while we did some internet work on the campus of MTSU.

Man, you gotta be really hurtin for a job, if you see this sign and decide to apply as a janitor at a gas station.

This is a pretty cool tattoo I saw on a girl.

It was a great trip, except for one mishap of communication at the end, and hopefully you will soon see the fruits of my efforts online.

It’s hard to take a good picture if you don’t have a camera with you. I like to take my camera with me as much as possible and am currently trying to figure out a way to carry it and my gear that isn’t a hindrance but that’s a topic for another post.

What that means is that sometimes I try taking pictures that make people uncomfortable, like in the picture below. I always shoot first and ask permission second. What this does for me, is preserve the authenticity of the moment, especially when dealing with strangers in public. But sometimes I’ve been asked to stop taking pictures. I’ve had people threaten to physically harm me if I continued. Sometimes I keep shooting and sometimes I stop. It just depends on the situation.

The guy in the blue shirt and the beard is one who threatened me. When I told him I had a right to shoot, he stepped in front of my camera and wouldn’t get out of the way. So the above shot is really my only one from that car wreck. And just FYI, I usually stop at a car wreck and offer my assistance, if my assistance is not needed, THEN I get the camera out and take pictures.

I know where I have the right to shoot and where I should have permission and I’m not afraid of defending my rights. I also guarantee that no one is going to take my camera or CF cards from me, unless my life is in danger (getting mugged, etc…).

Below is a link to a handy PDF article that outlines your rights. I keep a print out in my camera bag.

So, I’m a multimedia producer. I’m a photographer. I’m a videographer. I’m an editor. I just have yet to really bring it all together in the same project. The project I linked to above is an interesting example of how it can all come together to tell a story. I mean why should you be limited to one type of media? I found out while I was in Mexico how difficult it is to carry two sets of gear and wear two hats, video and photo, and try to come out with anything good. It was tough. I feel like I got good stuff with both cameras, but I had no intention of blending the two and so I’m not sure they will mix. Anyway, I’m interested in giving it a shot and seeing what I can do by mixing it all up and trying out this new way of doing things called Multimedia.

By the way, I came across that story because I was exploring the MediaStorm website. Bob Sacha, whom I worked with down in Mexico, just started working for them doing that exact type of thing. His photography is amazing and I expect his multimedia work to be equally amazing.

Ever since I created my Herostatus website and started putting pictures on there, I’ve been facing the issue of picture hosting, sharing, and displaying. See, I want the best of all worlds. I want to have a custom hosting solution and retain control of the display of my pictures, however, I would like to enjoy the benefits of a photo community like Flickr or Sony ImageStation. So somewhere I have to compromise.

I eventually decided the photo community is a better feature to have than total control over the display and hosting abilities so I started looking around.

Flickr is a pretty good website but I was reluctant to pay the $25 for the pro account. Well a few months ago, Zooomr came along. Zooomr could well be called a Flickr clone, however it is more advanced and has some features that are really cool. What really attracted me to them was that they are giving free Pro Accounts to bloggers who sign up and post a picture that is hosted by zooomr. About half the pics on this blog are hosted by Zooomr.

If you are interested in reading the lowdown on the deal check this link. It’s 2.5 gigs per month of upload ability which is plenty for most people.

I haven’t been able to recommend them though, because they didn’t have a mass uploader. You had to upload your pics one at a time. If I am going to embrace a photo hosting they gotta have that feature. Well today I discovered they implemented a mass photo uploader so now I can honestly say I am happy with my service so far and you should check it out. My Zooomr page can be found at this link.

The list of features can be explored by clicking this link. They have Geotagging and Portals which are both pretty cool…

http://pxn8.com/

In a nutshell it is an online photo editor. So you could use this instead of photoshop for some quick cropping of an image or some sepia tonage. You can either upload a picture and work on it or enter the web address of an image already on the net. After you apply your edits, it has a built in flickr uploader or you can save the image to your hard drive. It has a pretty friendly interface and it’s pretty quick and responsive. I had no trouble screwing up perfectly good pics although more editing options are always nice.

A local band begged me to take free pictures of them at a show they were supposed to play at tonight. So I finally relent and say I will do it. I go to the show and find out the band has broken up/gone on hiatus and isn’t playing the show tonight. They didn’t bother to tell me. Thats why I should always get paid and thats why I should get paid at least partial payment in advance.

In other news, I got my car back tonight. It looks good but there a few minor things I might need the shop to fix next time I am down there. Total cost: $3500. Thats about how much I thought it would be. I’ll get some pics uploaded soon.
