That’s definitely one of the best things ever, but this post has so much more to offer: check out this video!

As I was checking into my hotel in Atlanta, I see a band pull into the driveway. You can tell when it’s a band because they all have the same white van with the same style of trailer. So the first guy walks in to book the rooms and I asked him what band he was in, he said Jimmies Chicken Shack. No kidding! I’ve never seen them perform, but I do have some of their music on my ipod. So we get to talking and I mention that I photograph bands and they put me on their guest list and invite me to shoot the show that night at Smiths Ole Bar in midtown Atlanta. I’m pretty tired from a long day of traveling so I take a short nap then head out to the show.

I haven’t shot a show in over 6 months so I feel like I could have done better but below are a few selects from the night. You can check out the entire collection here.

I love the expression on the bass players face in this one!

One of the last songs they performed on this night was a cover song called “Waiting Room” originally by a band called Fugazi, perhaps a legend in the DIY punk rock scene. You can hear the covered version on their myspace page, which I linked above. What’s interesting to me is that it was almost exactly 10 years ago that I saw Fugazi play at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. The date was 11/24/98. I was already into live music of the rock and roll variety, but this show was one of my first big shows and it only reinforced my love of live music and the energy that comes with it. Here I am 10 years later, trotting around with a camera trying to capture the passion and energy that musicians bring to their craft.

Many of you that know me well know that I am a big fan of music lyrics. I search for them often so I can sing along with my favorite songs and I also use them for inspiration when I need a creative boost.

So you can imagine my excitement about this cool software I found called TunesTEXT. It’s an OSX Dashboard Widget that works with Itunes to automatically search for song lyrics to the song you are currently listening to. Not only that, it downloads those lyrics and copies them into the song ID3 info. It also shows you any album artwork attached to the file. You can also use this widget to advance the tracks or pause the music.

So anytime I’m working on something and I want to glance at the lyrics of the song that is playing, I just hit the widget key (F12) and suddenly I can sing until my voice is raspy. Below is a screen shot of the widget in action.

I have two complaints about it though. Sometimes it has trouble finding the lyrics to certain artists or albums. I guess it needs to search through more databases or something. The other problem is that usually when it is downloading the lyrics, it causes the music to skip for half a second or so. Not a deal killer, but pretty annoying. Other than that, it’s pretty great. I’d actually like to see this feature built right into Itunes.

Download it by going here: http://www.cyanworks.net/dboardTunesTEXT.html. The website is kinda sketch, but the app works great!

This video changed my life. I know a lot of people don’t like Blink 182 and I understand their reasons. However, I remember the day this video came on MTV and I saw the skateboarders and Tom’s guitar with stickers all over it and the energy they gave off, and I was immediately hooked on Blink 182. I went out and bought the CD and it didn’t leave my CD player for months. I was also inspired to take up skateboarding and eventually bought my first bass guitar and learned the notes for the songs from this album. I’ve never wavered in my love of live music and actually have this video to thank for it. Seeing this video again takes me back a long time, before I really knew who I was, before drugs and alcohol ruined some of my friends, before life got complicated. This video was my introduction to music as a way of life and it changed me for the good I think.

I’m not a huge prickly bastard when it comes to song lyrics. I prefer the music side of a well written hook-filled pop-punk-emo-screamo-rock song with a fast beat. It’s gotta be high energy and I usually like a singer with a distintive voice. But the lyrics are a second thought. That’s why I can listen to some christian bands and enjoy them even though I’m not christian (contrary to popuar belief, there are a few good ones out there… The Wedding, Run Kid Run, Spoken, Underoath, Relient K…)

However, two bands come to mind that write witty and creative lyrics that stand out and kinda set the bar for creativity. |Alkaline Trio| and |Reliant K|. Today’s post is about Alkaline Trio Lyrics. Someday I might highlight some Relient K lyrics.

Alkaline Trio is a band from Chicago with a really big dark streak as you will see from these lyrics. They sing about the darker side of love a lot and also about drinking and feeling some major self pity. I don’t suggest you take the lyrics seriously, but I think they are interesting to hear and read. Some of these would be rated ‘R’ if they were a movie. You’ve been warned!

|Alkaline Trio on Wikipedia|

“New Year’s Eve was as boring as heaven
I watched flies fuck on channel 11
There was no one to kiss, there was nothing to drink
Except some old rotten milk someone left in the sink” – Private Eye

“sorry i’m late. i was out spoiling my liver.” – Cooking Wine

“just below your thighs the temperature drops 5 degrees” – Cringe

“The other cops still call you “fatso.”
Short fuse and a top to blow.
Unhappy wife, shitty life, hit the bottle.
Your whole world dropped from under you.” – Cop

“Crack my head open on your kitchen floor
To prove to you that I have brains” – Nose Over Tail

“I wanna wake up naked next to you, kissing the curve in your clavicle.” – Clavicle

“lately i’ve been feeling dead inside,
like my guts have dried up and died.
but every night i water them back to life,
yeah every night i water them back to life.
and when i fall down, i’ll fall apart.
trade in my bike for a shopping cart.
and beg change from a world that needs some.” – My Little Needle

“head like an empty, sterile room. somehow i made a mess.
like watching newborn babies crack from work related stress.” – I Lied my Face Off

“the headaches, the shaking, the boredom the boardroom brings.
you’re scratching at itching, brought by the spiders beneath your skin.” – sleepyhead

“Shaking like a dog shittin’ razorblades,
waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me” – Radio

“I’ve got a big fat fuckin’ bone to pick with you my darling
In case you haven’t heard I’m sick and tired of trying
I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you,
plugged in and ready to fall…” – Radio

“I dont care who you’ve been kissing on these days
It’s out of my hands
and in my mouth with such a pleasant taste
I need a beer to wash it all away without a trace
And then i’ll drink 23 more
To wipe this stupid smile off my fucking face” — My Friend Peter

“And we laid in my bed like a train wreck
And we both got laid like concrete
And we fought like soldiers
But we died.. we died like flies” – Sun Dials

“Cause if assholes could fly
This place would be busier than O’Hare
There’s proof in the sky
It’s as thick as our skulls yet it’s thinner than air” – You’re Dead

“Never met a drink that I didn’t like
Got a taste of you, threw up all night” – Crawl

“I’ve got a book of matches
I’ve got a can of kerosene
I’ve got some bad ideas involving you and me
I shat the bed and laid there in it
Thinking of you wide awake for days” – This Could be Love

One of my favorite bands since about 10th grade just released a new album today and they are streaming it for free for a limited time on Purevolume.com. It’s called “Coming Home”. It’s pretty mellow rock, more mature than some of their older stuff but they have been getting more mellow as they get older. They’ve graduated from speedy pop punk like Blink 182 to more melodic rock in the vain of Jimmy Eat World. It’s worth checking out, especially for free.

I spent about an hour of my Independence Day at this site watching 80′s Music Videos. I watched stuff from
The Beastie Boys
The Specials
The Selector
The English Beat
Poison
The Bangles
Tight Fit
Twisted Sister
Michael Jackson
and some other ones I don’t remember.

My roommate always gives me a hard time about not knowing anything that came out before 1990 and he is pretty much right. I knew about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and that’s about it. Anyway, check out the site and watch some vids.
