It gets worse by the day. The US economy is collapsing. Life as we all know it is changing very rapidly. I don’t really know what to do so I’m still in photography school, feeling somewhat sheltered from the fallout. However, I do feel like it’s important to be educated about what is happening. I try to keep up with the news and I seek out information that goes further than what the mainstream media is providing.

I read these two blogs, which seem to present logical arguments and have been doing so for several years (predicting this mess we are now in).

Chris Martenson
Clusterfuck Nation (don’t let the name deter you)

I’d suggest watching the Crash Course (from the first link). It’s very educational and explains the problems we face in a way we can all understand.

I want my friends and family who read my blog to at least be aware of some of the ideas that exist outside of CNN and MSNBC. I am not trying to spread ideas of doom and gloom, but I do think it’s a very real possibility that things are worse than the government is willing to admit. I really don’t know how bad it will get, but I do fear we are facing a very different future than what we grew up in.

I met Joe McNally last summer at the Santa Fe Workshops and he was nice enough to let me hang out with his class on location at Abiquiu Lake in Northern New Mexico. That’s where I shot this HDR shot of the Mazda CX-7 I briefly owned.

In his portfolio slideshow he actually used a song from the Dropkick Murphy’s (an Irish punk rock band) and it really fits, which is awesome!

Anyway, he recently released what everyone says is an amazing book of photography stories and lessons called “The Moment it Clicks“. It’s on my amazon wish list if anyone feels like being super nice to me.

He also has a really great blog with great stories and photos. His recent post called “The long and winding road“, goes back in time a bit but then leads up to a special moment he has with his wife, Annie. While in Santa Fe I also met Annie who is equally awesome and they are both so nice and great to be around and as is obvious from the pictures in that post, they have a special relationship.

I highly recommend taking his classes or buying his book or at the very least, reading his blog.

I just read a brilliant piece of writing about the elevator business. Sounds like an awful topic to read about. I mean how interesting can an elevator actually be? Well that’s why the writing of this article in The New Yorker is so brilliant. It’s truly a fascinating look at this usually overlooked part of our lives.

I love the awkwardness of an elevator ride, the super short chit chat or the incredibly long silences, either way it’s interesting each and every time.

So, I’m a multimedia producer. I’m a photographer. I’m a videographer. I’m an editor. I just have yet to really bring it all together in the same project. The project I linked to above is an interesting example of how it can all come together to tell a story. I mean why should you be limited to one type of media? I found out while I was in Mexico how difficult it is to carry two sets of gear and wear two hats, video and photo, and try to come out with anything good. It was tough. I feel like I got good stuff with both cameras, but I had no intention of blending the two and so I’m not sure they will mix. Anyway, I’m interested in giving it a shot and seeing what I can do by mixing it all up and trying out this new way of doing things called Multimedia.

By the way, I came across that story because I was exploring the MediaStorm website. Bob Sacha, whom I worked with down in Mexico, just started working for them doing that exact type of thing. His photography is amazing and I expect his multimedia work to be equally amazing.

Last night my brother told me he had gotten another car while I was in Mexico and told me a little bit about how that process went. He went to the dealerships not planning on getting another car, but instead, traded in his few years old car for something new.

This happens all the time to people. If you’re at a car dealership then most likely you are somewhat interested in the idea of driving a different vehicle. The sales people know this, they just have to find your reasons for not doing it today and then eliminate those reasons. They are sneaky too.

Over the summer, I actually bought two cars (well, I leased one of them) and before that I’ve purchased a few cars, each by a different process. So I feel like I am pretty knowledgeable about the process and what to look for. On my most recent purchase, I feel like I got an incredible deal and am very happy with the 4runner. The best advice I can offer you is to be informed about the various ways to buy a car, the language of loans, and the common tricks car dealers use. I could write up a great article about the things I’ve learned, but I actually don’t have that much time or motivation. So instead, I will post this link: A Young Professionals Car Buying Guide. I found it pretty informative about real world car buying for young people.

Mint’s Note: Keep in mind that dealerships often claim that extended warranties are “included.” Included, though, doesn’t mean free. To include it, you’ll have to pony up: dealers belatedly explain you “have to” purchase the extended warranty, or the APR will shoot up. Don’t be fooled: your APR should only be affected by your credit worthiness.
