Why I prefer Kendrick

The name that adorns the top of my birth certificate is David Kendrick Disch. Until I got to college everyone called me ‘David’. But it was during my senior year of high school that I decided to go by ‘Kendrick’. Of course, it’s difficult to switch names, so I waited until I got to college to actually start telling people to call me ‘Kendrick’ instead of ‘David’. Of course I mistakenly applied to college using the name ‘David’ so the university knows me as ‘David’ and I have to correct people all the time. But everyone who has met me since August of 2000 calls me ‘Kendrick’ and everyone who knew me before that calls me ‘David’. I don’t really mind that much, I answer to both and have surprisingly little trouble knowing when to sign ‘David’ and when to sign ‘Kendrick’.

But here is my reason for going through all that hassle in the first place.

There are 3,553,128 people in the U.S. with the first name David.
It is statistically the 7th most popular first name.

There are 19,498 people in the U.S. with the first name Kendrick.
It is statistically the 1318th most popular first name.

maryam - 3,000 Maryams but 0 Mardanbigis

Rainer - Apparently there is nobody in the US named Rainer. That’s false. Hence, this web site is not accurate.

Beth - Yeah well at least there is one of you. Statistically speaking, I don’t exist.

kendrick - One thing to keep in mind this data is based off the 1990 census. So most of us were less than 18 years old, therefore not on the chart. I actually modifed that graphic to reflect myself showing up once. Cuz i know how to do stuff like that!

Rainer - So you’re lying. You’re prevaricating on your own blog.
