So I’m in LA right now enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells. This post won’t be as detailed and elaborate as I would like because I don’t have that much time.
I’m sleeping at my great-uncles (my mom’s uncle) house in Laguna Hills which is about 50 miles from Hollywood and about 10 miles from Laguna Beach where they filmed the show.
My flight left Kansas City at 7:20am and I landed in LA around 9:30am. Of course that’s 2 hours behind arkansas time. My first order of business after getting my rental car (a Mitsubishi Lancer) was to find a place to watch the Arkansas-LSU football game. I drove around a little bit in the area of the beaches and found a sports bar called “On the Rocks”. There is a bar in Fayetteville with the same name so I went with it. I sat there the entire time and watched Arkansas lose. Man I was pissed. My thoughts on the football game will be added later if I get around to it.
So then I drove around some more and just checked out the area. Then I met up with a friend of mine and her boyfriend and we had dinner at a little japenese restaurant and then walked around in the Westwood area and chose to watch “Babel”. My movie review will come later.
Then I drove down to my uncles house for the night.
This is my first trip to LA and so I have a few first impressions to share. First, the traffic wasn’t bad at all. I thought it would be much worse. However, my uncle told me that traffic was surprisingly light yesterday. Probably about 1/10th of the normal volume. Anyway we shall see. Second, The people are nice. At least nicer than the people in New York. So far, not a single person has been rude to me and some have even gone out of their way to be nice and friendly. Third, it doesn’t seem all that vast. I’ve only seen a few areas so far, but it doesn’t feel huge because I can’t see off into the distance very far because of the fog/smog. Maybe that will change today. Fourth, things here are really expensive. I had to buy some toothpaste in a pharmacy and it cost me $7.00. Fifth, the weather is awesome. I love wearing shorts. Yesterday was so perfect that shorts and t-shirt would have been perfect most of the day, but a light jacket and jeans would have been perfect too. Incredible! Sixth, they have no good radio stations. I flipped through the dial like 10 times and the best thing to listen to was a ridiculous talk show called the Tom Leykis show. I thought there would be plenty of good Rock stations. Luckily I grabbed my cd’s from my car at the airport. (note to self: you parked in Lot B7) And lastly, It’s just like any other city. I haven’t seen anything special about this place yet. It feels like any old suburbia so far.
These impressions may change over the next few days, but those are my first impressions.
