Why do those Mac ads bother me so much?

Man, nothing gets me steamed faster than those ridiculous mac vs pc commercials. I think they are funny but man they piss me off. A lot of people might think only a geek would feel strongly one way or another. Well I am a geek and today I had an epiphany about it.

It finally occurred to me why I get so defensive when I see one. Not only are they poking fun at PC’s (which is the funny part) but they are actually making fun of the PC user as well. And that is me. I’ve worked on Apple’s a lot over the last 7 years and I have respect for them. But I’m primarily a PC and Windows user and don’t want to switch. Both platforms have their problems, but if Mac really was so great and windows was really so bad, why would they have to try so hard to get people to switch. Simple economics proves people will go down the path of least resistance and while Apple is gaining ground, they just aren’t anywhere near as dominant as they think they deserve to be.

I choose to use a PC and choose to use Windows and those commercials actually dare to make me out as a retard who is actually jealous of the macs. You might think I”m silly for taking it personally, but it really is an attack on PC users. I do get personally offended and until now I just thought I was overreacting. But I’m not. I’m just naturally defensive when somebody challenges my decision making capacity.

Also, I’m not the only one. Seth Stevenson of Slate Magazine wrote a review of the ad campaign calling it, “Mac Attack: Apple’s Mean-Spirited New Ad Campaign“.

By the way, I would link to some examples on the Apple.com website, but every time I go there using either Firefox or Internet Explorer I get some kind of error that crashes my browser. This is the only website I’ve ever come across that does it consistently.

I guess I am lucky- I haven’t seen any of these!

Perhaps these ads anger you because your grammar and punctuation sucks. Maybe you should consider putting a a question mark after sentences such as the following: “Both platforms have their problems, but if Mac really was so great and windows was really so bad, why would they have to try so hard to get people to switch.” Perhaps it would be wise to leave off the apostrophe when using the plural form of a proper pronoun.

Apple Man is talking down to you because you never paid attention in English class when you were young, but mostly it has something to do with the fact that your computer sucks.

Ha, I just find all of the irony humorous – nice call out on the site. Personally, I love my PC. And PS to Rainer, I love your subject/verb agreement (or lack thereof). Regardless of whether that was intentional irony or not, nice.

so only two grammar mistakes in 5 paragraphs. thats the best you can do? I would say that’s not too bad considering I wrote this little article in about 10 mins and didn’t even do a spell check on it… The cost/benefit ratio of making perfect posts just isn’t worth the time.

This type of response is demonstrating my point exactly! It’s funny that you attack me personally instead of defending your beloved Apple computer company. This is a common tactic for people with insecurities. It’s really very sad. I know some people who might be able to help you!

“Simple economics proves people will go down the path of least resistance and while Apple is gaining ground, they just aren’t anywhere near as dominant as they think they deserve to be.”

The path of least resistance is to use Microsoft Windows, which comes on every PC sold at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, by Gateway, Dell, etc., etc.

You obviously do not know what that phrase means.
