My job… so far!

So, yeah… I’ve been in Santa Fe for about 30 days now. I’m settled in and have gotten most of my things unpacked and situated. I’m getting along fine at work and I think I’m doing a good job so far, although I did mess up a few things on my first big test. It’s not a big deal and nobody got mad, so it’s just a learning experience.

I’m feeling really inspired. Which is one reason I took this job. I get to hang out with and pick the brains of some of the best photographers in the world. The other day I ate lunch with and got to see some presentations from {Ralph Lee Hopkins}, who takes some amazing pics all over the world. His travel photography is just amazing.  I would put some pics in here, but that would be illegal, so just click that link instead and see his work. I did take this pic of him teaching. I love the photograph he is showing!

I’ve had a little bit of trouble telling people about the place that I work. My boss said it best the other day. The Santa Fe Workshops is in the business of providing photography camp to people that are willing to pay.

My job is to set up and then assist with most of the technology that instructors use to teach with. For example, in the pic above, the screen, the projector, and the laptop all have to be color calibrated and setup correctly for every presentation. I also do some scanning and printing of images. During the off season, I will be helping with the marketing of the workshops and the plan is for me to shoot and edit some video packages promoting the workshops. This may or may not include some traveling.

On any given week there are 7 classes being taught by 7 or 8 different instructors and each class has their own set of equipment that I maintain and set up for them each week. Each class lasts a week so during the course of the 8 week summer season we offer over 50 different classes with 50 different instructors. These instructors are all top notch talent and each offers their own unique perspective and techniques on the vast art of photography.

Well I hope this post clears up a few of the questions about what I am doing with my life now. This is a cool job and I’m pretty excited about being surrounded by photographers every day of the summer. It just started and I’ve already seen some amazing work. I can’t wait to see more.
